WHEN THE WORLD WATCHED
Directed by Andrew Lynch for
Noah Media Group and FIFA
Music by Aaron May & David Ridley
We were approached to compose an original score for this gorgeous four-part retrospective on Brazil's 1970 world cup campaign. Director Andrew Lynch's goal was to create an immersive experience, never breaking the temporal flow of a narrative driven by audio interviews with the Brazilian legendary XI, and visually accompanied with reels of hitherto unseen film footage from the FIFA archive.
Our challenge was double-headed: we had to create an energetic percussion language, based on Samba rhythms, which also felt vintage and 'of the day'. We also had to create a totally contrasting modern-classical sound-world to capture the emotion of that particular world cup campaign, and to tell the story of those great players.
